Automatic External Defibrillation

Heart and circulatory disease claims around 200,000 lives each year. Many could have been saved if a defibrillator was made available.  Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are now becoming more common throughout a range of public and work places.  A casualty’s survival rate will dramatically increase if an AED is available and if you have appropriately qualified personnel to use it.  This very practical course will enable your learners to use the AED competently and with confidence. Not only does this course deal with the use of an AED but it also includes vital training in resuscitation and choking procedures.

What is an AED
It is a device which provides an electric shock when a casualty experiences Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) or heart attack.

An AED can be used when the heart muscle is in Ventricular fibrillation – Fibrillation is when the heart electrical system becomes totally disorganised.

Another heart condition when an AED can be used is Ventricular tachycardia – This is when the ventricles may not have time to refill with blood, so blood circulation will cease.

SCA - Sudden Cardiac Arrest

When in VF the heart rhythm is so chaotic that the heart quivers and is unable to pump blood to the vital organs of the body. Once the heart has entered VF, SCA occurs. The only effective treatment of SCA is to deliver an electrical shock using a device called a defibrillator, which stops the chaotic rhythm of a heart in VF, giving it the chance to restart beating with a normal rhythm. Timing is of the essence, if a person collapses due to a heart attack or cardiac arrest, if that person is not breathing normally then a combination of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED must be implemented.
